Virus Hunters

by josh

For the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The feature was on these two scientists that have created a method of seeking out and identifying viruses. I've attached a thumbnail that I used for this. I generally start at this loose state before tightening it up for the sketch, and final. The art director wanted it to feel a bit dark and moody, and had the headline, "Virus Hunters". I'm a little bit more biased towards the second sketch with the dots. But maybe I can still use that for something...

Damn, that's just beautiful.
In the sketch for the last piece, I read the guy in the orange as if he was looking at the virus' and was looking up at them. Kind of like he's shocked. Now that I see the final version, it sort of makes sense that he's not scared, but it looks like he might have found a cure for them. Although I do wish he was afraid of the big floating virus'.

Btw, do you use reference for your stuff at all? It doesn't look like it, but I was just wondering.

thanks guys! Oskar, I actually used a lot more reference on this job than what I normally do. Basically, I try to combine drawing out of my head and using photo reference for parts I can't immediately draw. I'm especially attracted to drawings that don't immediately remind you of a photo. Though sometimes I get lazy and rely on drawing from my imagination more than I should.

Meh, it's all ok. Your art has gone on a decline Joshua. You were at your height when you drew pictures of kids with backpacks, swaying to rock music, whilst wearing Jack Purcell's.
